The Aspire 522 is exceedingly thin and light, weighing just 1.06kg, yet the build feels pretty sturdy. Still, while I wouldn't want to run large spreadsheets or edit video on the Aspire One 522, it's quite adequate for watching web video or making a video call.

If you can live with Win7 for now and just SSH into the One True Operating system from an Aspire 522, which is what I'll be doing, then I recommend the 522. First of all its not easy requires a 32bit , and if you don't get Win7 from Microsoft Store its a pain to find. At the heart of the Aspire One 522, we have AMD's Fusion APU, the C-50, which is a dual-core running at 1GHz. I quite like Acer's minimalistic design of the 522, it gives the appearance of a slim netbook without any extra fluff.

This 10-inch Aspire One 522, follows on from the AMD Nile based 521, also 10-inch in size and carries over the same chassis but in green, and no doubt there'll be more colors. With not much Linux luck, I stuck 64 bit Win7 enterprise on it and went to the local PC store and bought a 4 GB SODIMM (Kingston KVR1066D3S7/4G), and set about opening the case up. I'm not a big touchpad fan, but I did appreciate the multitouch capability of Aspire One 522's touchpad, which supports pinch and zoom on Websites.

I would recommend just upgrading to 32bit Win7 Pro/Home, I have no idea how much difference 4GB or 3.5GB is on a 1.0 GHz processor. A Win7 Upgrade Key is for doing a Win 7 upgrade install over an existing install of Vista. Question: why install WinXP, any version, on the netbook when Win7 works fine on it, and Win8 will likely be on shelf in 12 months or so.

You have to buy a legit ISO copy of Win7 online from Microsoft, and then also download the Win7 USB Installer app, and use the app and the ISO to create the bootable Win7 USB. Overall, I really liked the build and finish of the 522. Oh, and under Win7 it takes ages to boot (you do have an antivirus, right?), so I will take the story with a grain of salt or two.

I occasionally found the cursor jumping from place to place while typing on the Aspire One 522, and it took me a while to realize this was because when I placed my palms on either side of the keyboard to type, sometimes my left palm would slip over to the touchpad. I will use the 522 for the time being now though as going back to the single-core N270-based Gigabyte Touchnote is not an option but when the 1215b is available, it will be at the top of the list for my next purchase and test. Thats 100gm lighter than the pre-installed solution and would bring the weight of the 522 down to under 1.1KG which is impressive given the CPU, GPU and battery life.

In Win7 Starter, there is a icon in the Notification Area of the taskbar, which looks like a battery with a power plug over the top when the netbook is plugged into its power brick, and looks like a plain battery when it's not plugged in. This may be a lesson for people thinking of upgrading Win7 starter. I tried the HDMI port without problems, except that Win7 Starter only allows one display.

The problem is, I toook Win7 Starter off a ways back and replaced it with Ubuntu, then later win8, so I can't flash within the OS. However, when I try to flash using the fn-esc combo, I can't get anything to load, either. And the big con, the serious con, the con that costs this review a WHOLE star-memory upgrade is SOUL-KILLINGLY difficult, yet still mandatory, since 1GB is just not enough for Win7! Just checked my other notebook running Win7 64 bit and with media player running a movie, MS Word, Picasa, chrome with 4 tabs and itunes running, physical memory usage was 1.5gb.

I had to fire up the OS reinstall partition to clean out the Starter/Basic Aero Enabler hack, before installing Win7 Anytime Upgrade Starter to Home Premium. You can also remove this artificial limit Microsoft imposed on most of the 32bit Win7 (including the Win7 starter) by using the unaware patch described earlier in this thread (see /RcR11t ). If you are uncomfortable running the small patch program at the site, you can just follow the instructions using tools from Microsoft only. My biggest complaint is that without LVM support I wasn't able to set up dual-boot with the Win7 Starter that came on the device.

As you need a 2.6.37+ kernel to make networking work on the AO522, installing stable release as is won't work. Posted this in the AO522 users lounge forum but will probably have more luck here. The 522's display has a higher native resolution than the Toshiba NB550D: 1280x720 pixels vs 1024x600 pixels. However, considering that the OP says this one is running Win7, it has to be newer than late 2009 (unless the OP upgraded it). Installed Ubuntu 11.04 32bit, and WinXP 32bit (will buy Win7 one day, but not today).

On the 522, no screws on the bottom-side of the case need to be removed. It's cheap, it has pretty good graphics, it does not weigh very much, and after typing this screed for an hour while hunting down stray pipes and backslashes, WLAN on and screen at 100% brightness, Win7 says I still have 5hr 11min battery left. My comments are based on running Win7/64 Enterprise not Linux.

Booted into Win7/64, it reported 4GB RAM with 3.73 usable (graphics controller grabs 256 MB). To be honest with you I don't see any advantage of having a 64bit OS on a system like the 522, neither use 4gb. It does anything alone, you just need to point to the win7 and it starts creating your image to USB.
